The daily number of amputations of limbs of severely injured persons is huge. Arms and legs have to be amputated in emergency surgeries in order to prevent deadly infections and in order to secure the survival of the earthquake victims“. This is how Dr. Karl Rigal, senior physician at the Vienna Hanusch-Hospital in Austria and LIGHT FOR THE WORLD board member describes the extent of the natural catastrophe from a medical point of view.
For this reason the focus of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD‘s reconstruction efforts is on the integration of persons with disabilities and on the barrier-free design of structures and buildings.
LIGHT FOR THE WORLD provides € 300,000 in emergency aid for the reconstruction of Haiti after the disastrous earthquake. This aid is aimed at persons with disabilities, as this group is not only hit especially hard by the catastrophe but is also drastically disadvantaged in the current fight for survival. „Thousands of victims of the Haiti earthquake have lost legs or arms. We will ensure that those living with a disability since the earthquake will get the chance of a future and of a self-determined life“, Rupert Roniger, managing director of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD in Austria, explains the commitment of the organisation in the area.
